Hyperuricosuria (HUU/SLC)

General description

Hyperuricosuria and Hyperuricemia cause congenitally changes in the purine metabolism . The changed metabolism might lead to formation of uric acid crystals. Preventative, affected dogs should get a low purine diet. Additionally, adequate hydration is vital.

Detailed description

Hyperuricosuria and hyperuricemia cause congenitally changes in the purine metabolism. Naturally, dogs excrete Allantoin as an end-product. Dogs with a homozygous mutation in the SLC2A9-gene excrete less Allantoin and at the same time more uric acid (hyperuricosuria). Equally, uric acid concentration in plasma increases 2-4 times compared to healthy dogs (hyperuricemia). Due to being less water-soluble than Allantoin, higher concentrations of uric acid in urine could lead to the formation of crystals, which build vesical calculus and have to be removed by surgery. Preventative, affected dogs should get a low purine diet. Additionally, adequate hydration is vital.
