Fanconi syndrome

General description

Due to renal dysfunction, electrolytes and nutritive substances can not be reabsorbed from the urine in Fanconi affected dogs. Therefore, important metabolic substrates are excreted with the urine and excessive uptake of water and urinating are typical symptoms. Without treatment, affected dogs exhibit amyosthenia, acidosis and general weakness that leads to death ultimately.

Detailed description

Fanconi syndrome is a condition in which the kidneys are no longer able to reabsorb electrolytes and nutrients from the primary urine. Instead, these important components are excreted in the urine.

The main symptoms are excessive drinking and urination. High glucose levels can be detected in the urine. If an animal with Fanconi syndrome is not treated, muscle weakness, acidosis and a deterioration in general health will occur. The disease ultimately leads to death. In Basenjis, Fanconi syndrome typically occurs between the ages of 4 and 8 years.
