Retinopathy

General description

A genetic variant in the RHD5 gene has been identified in cats as the cause of retinopathy (a disease of the retina). The mutation causes a delay in the eye’s adaptation to darkness (dark adaptation). Changes in the retina can occur even in young cats, but they may also develop only after several years. As people age, the disease progresses and can impair vision.
