Detailed description

The colour of the dark pigment eumelanin is determined at the B or brown gene locus. Three different gene variants (alleles) are known on the TYRP1 gene, which is responsible for the production of the colour pigment eumelanin. The brown variants show a suggested allelic series, with the following dominance pattern: B > b > bl. The B allele is dominant and represents the black coat colour. The two gene variants of the alleles b and bl cause a premature termination of eumelanin formation and thus lighter brown shades of the coat in a chocolate brown (b) or a cinnamon-coloured tone (bl).
