Congenital hypothyroidism with goiter (CHG)
Congenital hypothyroidism with goiter (CHG)
General description
In affected pups a delay in growth occurs, which becomes obvious at about two weeks of age comparing with healthy pups. Opening of the eyes and ear canals is delayed and the thyroid glands are enlarged (goiter). Bones do not lenghten appropriately causing irreversible dwarfism.
Breeds
Fox Terrier, French Bulldog, Rat Terrier, Spanish Water Dog, Tenterfield Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier
Detailed description
The term hypothyroidism stands for all types of thyroid gland hypofunctions, regardeless of the cause of the disease. The disease manifests itself in delayed growth in puppies, which becomes obvious at the age of 2 weeks. While healthy puppies experience a growth spurt at this stage, the development of affected dogs stops. Sudden deaths during this period have also been reported. The opening of the eyes and ear canals is significantly delayed by this disorder. Insufficient thyroid hormone levels in the blood of affected dogs impact bone growth (dwarfism) and cause the thyroid gland (thyroidea) to enlarge as a compensatory response. This can lead to palpable thick nodules in the neck and nape region.
If the disease is diagnosed in time, daily lifelong doses of thyroid hormones can reduce the severity, although dwarfism is an irreversible consequence. Otherwise, affected dogs have a rather low life expectancy and usually die as puppies.
