Detailed description
It has been demonstrated in some dog breeds (e.g. Welsh Corgi, Collie, Border Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Miniature long-haired and Smooth Dachshund) that a missense mutation in FGF5 is associated with the coat length differences. Long hair is inherited in an autosomal recessiv trait, therefore dogs that have a short (smooth) coat may carry the long coat-allele.
