Lysosomal storage disease (LSD) in the Weimaraner

Lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs) are a diverse group of inherited disorders characterized by progressive neurological symptoms. A hereditary cause of LSD has been identified in several dog breeds, including Dalmatians and Dobermans.

A hereditary variant in the CNP gene associated with LSD has also been identified in the Weimaraner. From around 4 years of age, affected Weimaraners show progressive symptoms such as drowsiness, signs of paralysis, ataxia of the hind legs, loss of interest in food, changes in posture and neurological symptoms such as cognitive problems and lack of coordination.
