General description<\/strong><\/h4>

Dilated cardiomypathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart characterized by changes of the heart chambers and valves which results in weakened contractions and poor pumping ability. In the breeds Standard Schnauzer and Giant Schnauzer, a variant in the RBM20 gene has been found to correlate with DCM. The typical age of onset of first clinical signs varies from 1 to 3 years. Increased respiratory rate and effort, coughing, exercise intolerance, decreased appetite, syncope and pale mucous membranes are among the most common symptoms of affected dogs. <\/p>

Dilated cardiomypathy (DCM)<\/strong> is a disease of the heart characterized by changes of the heart chambers and valves<\/strong> which results in weakened contractions and poor pumping ability. Moreover, DCM is the most common myocardial disease reported in dogs. Even though DCM has been described in many dog breeds, the underlying genetic variants differ between the individual breeds.<\/p>
