General description<\/strong><\/h4>

The term “albinism” describes a group of conditions in which the production of skin pigment (melanin synthesis) is impaired. There are two types of albinism: oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), which affects the eyes and skin, and ocular albinism (OA), which affects only the eyes. Depending on the extent to which the synthesis of the two corresponding color pigments (eumelanin and pheomelanin) is disrupted, different forms can be distinguished. If no color pigments are produced at all, the cats appear white with pink skin, a pink nose, pink paws, pink lips, and blue to reddish eyes. A variant of the TYR gene has been described in a cat that had white fur, blue eyes with a reddish sheen, and increased sensitivity to light. <\/span><\/p>
